Operating Speeds
The following table on maximum operating speeds of discs and cylinders is taken from the new safety code.

TABLE 20
STANDARD MAXIMUM SPEEDS IN SURFACE FEET PER MINUTE

Classification Number Types of Wheels (See Section 1 for Definitions) Low Strength Medium Strength High Strength

SFPM SFPM SFPM
2 Type 2 - Cylinder Wheels including plate mounted, inserted nut and projecting stud - Segments 5000 6000 7000
5 Abrasive Discs: Plat Mounted Inserted Nut and Projecting Stud; Solid or Segmental 5500 7000 8500

Discs of "J" hardness and softer are considered low strength. From K to N medium strength, "O" and harder high strength.

In order to calculate the SFPM of an abrasive disc you need to know:

  1. The revolutions per minute of the disc (RPM)
  2. The diameter of the disc in inches (D)

Then SFPM =

3.1416 x D x RPM
_____________
12

Discs do not change in diameter with wear. Therefore the SFPM remains the same throughout the life of the disc.

Use Anchor's RPM--->SFPM Converter
